Unfortunately the Sassafras bacteria results from 8/20 are a mixed bag, with 2 sites failing again, 1 site passing, and 1 site passing but with elevated levels of bacteria. The harmful algal bloom remains active throughout much of the river. Maryland Department of the Environment will be keeping the Water Contact Advisory in effect until Microcystis cell counts drop below the threshold of concern at all sites on the river. We're hopeful that these cool temperatures will slow down the bloom, but please continue to exercise caution and limit or avoid water contact as much as possible, especially between Freeman Creek and Fox Hole Landing. Our water quality monitoring run yesterday showed that dissolved oxygen levels remain low, clarity remains poor (less than 12"), and chlorophyll levels are very high, especially by Hen Island, Swantown Creek, Mill Creek, and Georgetown.
